Kinetico PRO

An IOT ecosystem for water devices connecting business admin, restaurant/retail brands, and installers

MOBILE APP & ADMIN WEB DASHBOARD

The Challenge

Kinetico has been in the water business since 1970 selling commercial water filters, water softeners, and reverse osmosis devices but needed an innovative IOT product line for their commercial business.

A normal device is not nearly as powerful as an IOT device which allows for real time water/data tracking, digital installation via a mobile app, and constant connectivity to a cloud environment via Wifi

Our Solution

Our team designed and engineered a web dashboard for Kinetico and for it’s brands to track their devices and IOT data. We also designed and engineered a mobile app for installers to activate devices.

The web admin dashboard for Kinetico includes brand management, location tracking, user/team management, IOT data charts, IOT triggered alerts, and much more! The mobile app for installers has powerful features such as real time GPS, QR code scanning, and a complex integration to AWS IOT Core.

Design process

Designing an admin panel for an IoT custom software involves understanding the user’s needs, mapping out the functionality, and creating a clean, intuitive interface that enables efficient monitoring and control of connected devices.

1. Define information architecture for all the platform technology.

The information architecture consists of creating a navigation/data hierarchy so that we have have a visual reference of how the platform will be organized.

For Kinetico, we focused first on the admin panel which would have an all inclusive data hierarchy. We then worked on the brand admin panel and the installer mobile application, both were subsets of the admin panel data.

3. Visual Design

We created wireframes and high fidelity designs for every possible user interaction in the system.

Our design team used Figma as our tool of choice to create wireframes and high fidelity designs.

We designed every possible user interaction in the visual design and included nuances such as empty states, first time onboarding, error messages, success messages and much more!

2. Translate the UX Research into visual elements.

The main UI elements was based on the information architecture.

The UI elements for Kinetico included IOT specific components such as data charts, QR code scanning, pie charts, and bluetooth/wifi connection. In addition, the platform also included standard UI components such as buttons, file inputs, and much more!

Features

Data Charts

The web dashboard and mobile applications include complex data charts for tracking water flow, pressure, salt levels and much more.

OTA Updates

The admin dashboard includes firmware upload and version management and allows for admin to initiate OTA updates based on complex rules

Bluetooth/wifi connectivity

The mobile app allows an installer to use Bluetooth to connect to the device and pass it Wifi credentials to establish a permanent online connection to AWS.

QR Code Scanning

The installer app allows for scanning a QR code to activate the device.

Location Details

Every location has different devices, alerts, user permissions, and unique IOT data.

Admin panel

Our team designed and engineered the web dashboard for Kinetico admin and the web dashboard for brands partnered with Kinetico.

The admin panel was built on state-of-the-art web technologies such as React.js, Node.js, MySQL, and DynamoDB. The cloud environment is Amazon Web Services and the IOT infrastructure uses AWS IOT Core for key tasks such as OTA updates.

Devices

Water Filters, Reverse Osmosis, and Water Softeners.

The commercial Kinetico IOT product suite includes three major product categories which have a diverse set of IOT data such as water flow, pressure, temperature, filter cartridge expiration/exhaustion and much more.

Technical information

The IOT platform spans a wide range of technology as it includes Android/iOS mobile apps, a web dashboard, a cloud environment to host API’s and servers, and an IOT infrastructure. In addition, the front end includes javascript libraries for data charting and pdf generation. Our team also integrated third party API’s such as Firebase for push notifications, Twilio for SMS, and Mandrill for transaction emails.
